All Hallows Eve Arrives Early
Witchy women, practitioners of all kinds, and enthusiasts of all things spooky hear the call! All Hallows Eve approaches and some are not yet ready for this blessed night where the veil between worlds is said to thin. Fear not, Birds of Valhalla has what you need for your Halloween cravings. From spooky to just autumn vibes, there is a wide range in the store for this time of year. With candles, lotions, wax melts, soaps, and shampoo bars, your body will smell of Halloween without the effects of glitter in your lungs from the local craft store visit.
Nighttime always spawns the spooky and supernatural. Pumpkin Sandalwood, Tonka, and oud wood make for the perfect Samhain vibes in Ichabod’s Chase. Inspired by the famous literary chase in Sleepy Hollow from Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the orange and black soap is stamped with the fearsome jack-o-lantern face of the Headless Horseman. The story is told time and time again, never tiring from year to year and inspiring many tourist visits up near the studio to the quiet and serene town of Sleepy Hollow. If you’re not afraid of the Headless Horseman, show off your bravery and claim your carnelian stone prize from the top of Ichabod’s Chase soap. Sleepy Hollow will never be the same once you’ve washed with this spooky sudsy bar.
“Quoth the raven ‘Nevermore’!” The most famous of all macabre writers, Edgar Allen Poe gets his own soap inspired by the famous poem The Raven. Scented to bring you into Poe’s seaside library where he wrote and topped with an obsidian heart and raven skull, the poem becomes tangible as you wash with the black and red bar. Stamped on the side and filled in with more of the ethical mica powders that color the soap (along with activated charcoal), the soap will have you engaged in guessing, pondering weak and weary, over many volumes of forgotten lores. Perhaps as you purchase your own bar of this telltale soap, you will be graced by the tapping at your chamber door by some visitor that may say as your word of parting “Nevermore”.

Having your house smell like the holidays is always a great thing. It changes the mood of the house and those in it to whatever is desired. With a pumpkin sandalwood candle, you’ve got the scent of Samhain in your grasp. The gourds of pumpkins weren’t the initial “Jack-o-lanterns” but they sure do allow a lot more license with carvings to keep the Wild Hunt out of the homes as Odin rides through the towns. The deep sandalwood notes are sure to show the Hanged Man the strength of your home and household as he rides through the night to find the souls that have escaped from Nifelheim.
If candles aren’t your jam due to children or pets or fear of fire, and you still want your house to smell amazing, then grab up some of our vegan and bird-safe wax melts. Apple Cinnamon to smell like an apple pie has been baking, pumpkin sandalwood to make sure you’ve got that earthy and warm fall day, and cardamom and star anise to remind us that mulling spices and mulled cider are acceptable to warm the soul. Maple cream to bring us into the forest to tap the maple syrup from the trees. Figs are always harvested between May and November, but many say October is the peak time for sweetness. Gathering up the autumn fig harvest, it truly smells like autumn has arrived when this melts down in your warmer at home.
But for an added dose of creepy, spooky, and macabre we decided to take our melts up a notch. As these beautiful skulls melt in your warmer, the scents of sweet and sensual fruity plum and citrus merge with a heart of sultry amber and jasmine, resting on base notes of musk and Amyris in the Amber Noir fragrance skulls. Bright citrus and a touch of black cherry enhance the dark plum heart with amber, sugar, and vanilla to reinforce the sweetness while musk and freesia add a light earthy dimension to Cashmere Plum. Autumn bleeds through as the red wax spills into the warmer and the fragrances fill your home with the sensual lure of Halloween and all things spooky.
In a house in the woods that stands on chicken legs, the fearsome Baba Yaga resides. The house spins constantly, making whoever seeks out the wise old woman figure out the challenge to gain entrance to her home. The stories tell of Baba Yaga stealing children to cook and eat while others tell of her flying through the night in a mortar she steers with the pestle. Scented like the dried herbs she keeps in her kitchen for her spells and soups, the soap made of soap scraps (the “souls” of soaps long “dead” [they’re sold to you, don’t worry. Nothing alive is in the soaps]) is fitting for the Baba Yaga as she travels with Death to devour the newly released souls.
Even in the darkest of nights and the scariest of times, it’s terrifying to be caught with dry skin! Luckily, Birds of Valhalla has a lotion, or three, that pushes the fear of being ashy and dry back into the realm of darkness and terror. Cardamom Cinnamon cream is described as being hugged by fall itself and we’re inclined to agree. It’s the trip to the craft store without that glitter, remember? Cranberry Woods and Pumpkin Sandalwood finish out the large bottle fragrances. Who would have thought that these fall scents would banish the negativity (cinnamon) and bring abundance (cranberry) and luck (pumpkin). After all, with all the spooky scary skeletons around, we need our protection and luck!
And one lucky person in fairytales is the Woodsman. However, given this time of year, we may be worried about what else the woodsman does. With some bourbon notes in this soap, our savior may be a little out of sorts in the frasier and hickory woods. Maybe the person we’re running from in these woods knows them better than we do… To get on the woodsman’s side, clean him up with the soap and your savior will be in the dark and dirt no more.
Spooky scary skeletons, ghosts, goblins, and ghouls alike all want to be part of this time of year. Spiders spin their webs and cast a creepy crawly shadow on anything around. Come to the dark side, one and all, and enjoy what Birds of Valhalla have to offer for this blessed festival of Samhain, All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. We put a spell on you, and now you’re ours. Blow out the black flame candles, let the blood run red in the wax, and let the tell-tale heartbeat as the raven flies from your door. The Horseman and woodsman laugh beyond the bridge, waiting for your imminent return to our shop. Every year the stories are told, and every year people return.
Happy Haunting!
