Beltane Celebration: Fire, Fertility, and the Changing Season

The weather is getting warmer. The trees cloak themselves in green. The creatures of the day return from parts unknown with their children. The sun chases away the shadows. The light has returned, summer is here. People celebrate this seasonal shift through festivals like Beltane, an ancient festival marking the beginning of summer.
What is Beltane?
Many people ask what Beltane is and how it's celebrated today. For centuries, this shift in season has been celebrated by festivals like Beltane: a Pre-Christian Celtic tradition of acknowledging Summer. Traditionally, the Celtic people only acknowledged two seasons: Summer and Winter, which is why this holiday falls in the middle of our modern Springtime.
Beltane celebrates the beginning of the warm season and open pastures. People believed that the start of these two seasons were periods that thinned the veil between the worlds of humans and the supernatural- allowing for witches and fairies to roam.
In order to combat the supernatural, people performed specific rituals during Beltane- like the fire. Beltane roughly translates to "bright fire" and fire itself serves as a way to purify. In this circumstance, people lit fires, drove cattle between bonfires, and people danced over the flames in order to cleanse and protect themselves. More importantly, Beltane celebrations served as a time to connect to loved ones, embrace fertility, and to appreciate the warm season ahead. It's a time for renewal, and to grow with the season.
Beltane Rituals Meaning & Symbolism
Traditional Beltane rituals and concepts include the Beltane Fire that aids in purification and protection. There is also a primary focus on fertility. This does not just focus on the ability for humans and animals alike to produce offspring- though this is a huge part of the equation. The concept of fertility pertaining to Beltane celebrations primarily focuses on the idea of bringing something into the world. Whether it be a person, a crop, a painting, or connection. Fertility is permission to grow again after experiencing the stagnant life of winter. This is further highlighted by the focus of energy being returned, thanks to the warmer weather beginning. There is also a focus on spiritual awareness, thanks to the connection between worlds becoming thinner.
Why Beltane Celebration Matters Today
Most people are familiar with the concept of the winter blues, scientifically referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.). Specifically people who live in areas where winters are drastically different than summers. The emotional toll of being surrounded by darkness and cold can be extensive.
For many, Beltane marks the end of those dark times. Choosing to connect with nature and conduct rituals acknowledges the seasonal changes which also creates feelings of mindfulness, and creates a grounding effect; allowing for an improved mentality.
Even if not from an area where you are stuck inside for half the year, being disconnected from nature and being able to appreciate your natural surroundings takes a toll on mental health. Beltane and its rituals allow for us to reconnect.
